Bike Trail Lewes to Rehoboth

You can bike or walk from Lewes to Rehoboth Beach without ever getting onto Route 1!

I don’t know about you, but riding my bike on the shoulder of Route 1, dodging the cars and buses and motorcycles is not my idea of fun. But, cycling the beautiful, shaded Junction & Breakwater Trail is great exercise and relaxing at the same time.

It is Delaware’s third and longest rail-trail in the state and one of the most important economic and fitness boosts for eastern Sussex County in this young 21st century.” Read More!

Celebrate the 4th in Lewes, Delaware

Spend an old-fashioned 4th of July weekend in Lewes, Delaware. Check the full calendar at this Events Page.

Join the locals tonight for “First Thursday” on Second Street between 6 and 8 pm. The shops are open late and there’s entertainment in the street. I’ll be there looking for something special to wear this weekend, will you?

On Saturday, don’t miss the Historic Lewes Farmers Market on 3rd and Shipcarpenter Streets. You can find everything from great vegetables, fresh cut flowers, locally grown lamb and fresh local eggs. This is a must for good food and camaraderie.

Then, also on Saturday, head down the street and enjoy the annual Sidewalk Art and Artisans Show at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and surrounding streets.

On Sunday, JULY 4th, enjoy the games along 2nd Street for kids of all ages and the Boat Parade on the Lewes Canal around 2 pm. End the day with the “Doo-Dah Parade”, a one-of-a-kind event not to be missed.

Of course, Lewes Beach is a great place to relax with the family – the weather forecast is Sunny and warm! Happy 4th of July!

There is so much to do in the Lewes, DE, area over the Memorial Day Weekend, it’s hard to choose! One of my favorite organizations is holding its 5th Annual Delaware By Hand Members’ Day Fine Arts and Crafts Show, Saturday, May 29, 2010, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Zwaanendael Museum park, Lewes, featuring wood, metal, glass, ceramics, photography, jewelry, fiber, sculpture, baskets, prints and paintings; free admission; free parking at Lewes Presbyterian Church lot across street. Lightship Overfalls annual party and auction, Friday, May 28, 2010, 6-9:30 p.m., at the UD Virden Center, Pilottown Rd., Lewes; with food, wine and beer, live and Chinese auction; tickets, $35, and if available, $40 at the door; call 645-8655; or visit Lewes Gourmet/Puzzles, Kids’ Ketch or Lewes chamber.

Lewes Tulip Festival, April 24, 2010

The Lewes Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Lewes in Bloom, The Lewes Historical Society, Lewes Parks & Recreation Commission and the Historic Lewes Farmers Market to create a new event which will blossom on April 23 & 24. Tulips will be on display all over Lewes at the city’s first Tulip Festival. Lewes Canalfront Park will also host an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you haven’t been to the new canalfront park, this is the perfect weekend to enjoy the exhibits, prizes and fun along the canal. Winterjam Fundraiser Friday March 19th

Winterjam, the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation’s biggest yearly fundraiser, is rescheduled from 7 to 11 p.m., Friday, March 19, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.
Tickets may be purchased at the door for $15 each. Tickets purchased earlier for the previous date may be used for the new date.
Members of the Funsters, Comfort Zone, 33 1/3 and the Cape Henlopen School District’s Hindsight 20/20 will perform.
Guests can check out more than 50 items in the silent auction, buy a raffle ticket for two tickets to a Philadelphia Eagles game, win door prizes, dance, gather with Cape alumni and have fun to benefit the Cape Henlopen School District students and teachers.
All proceeds support the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation’s (CHEF’s) teacher minigrant program, Cape’s homeless/at risk program, a student performing arts grant and future programs for the Cape schools. Teller Wine 7th Annual Expo and Benefit

Mark your calendar! On Saturday, March 27th Teller Wines will have their 7th Annual Wine Expo & Benefit at the Lewes Yacht Club from 1 to 4pm. This is a great event with over 100 top-knotch wines to taste and really great gourmet food (appetizers and small bites). This year, a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. Tickets are $60, and they sell out quickly. For tickets, call 302-644-7400 or pick them up at Teller Wines, 1201A Savannah Rd. in Lewes.

This year the HLFM will be offering three fabulous silent auction items at this event that are so special that you will want to get a ticket just to be able to bid on them!

Have you been to First Thursday yet in the downtown Lewes shopping district? This year they continued the monthly event right through the winter. The local shops are open from 6 pm – 8 pm and many offer special pricing, refreshments and a chance to meet your friends and neighbors. Shop awhile and then visit one of the many great restaurants for dinner. Striper Bites is always a busy spot with a great bar and varied menu. If you’re coming this Thursday, let me know. Bill and I will be there and I’ll have my camera. Maybe we can meet for drinks?

Bring your pet to Lewes Feb. 13th

The 4th Annual Lewes Winter Fest Block Party takes place in the Historic Commercial District surrounding Second Street on Saturday, February 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the day, numerous retail businesses and restaurants will be offering holiday-themed specials including discounts on specific items.

Enter your pet into the popular Pet Pageant where pets of all sizes and shapes, ages and genders strut their stuff in front of the judges and the crowds. The four categories of competition are Formal Wear, Leisure Wear, Companion Look Alike and Kids Freestyle, open only to children. Registration takes place at P.U.P.S. (Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop) at 123 Second Street. You can also register the day of the event in front of Citizens Bank from Noon – 1:30 p.m. The registration entry donation is $5 and benefits the Sussex County S.P.C.A. All contestants must be on site no later than 1:30 p.m. to receive their entry numbers. Contestants will line up with their owners at 1:45 p.m. behind Citizens Bank. The judges will award three prizes in each of four categories. This year, very special shelter dogs will be at the event to show their unconditional love and to look for their forever homes. Winterjam set for February 5th!

Winterjam,the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation’s(CHEF) biggest fundraiser of the year, Friday, February 5th, is also a fun event! I just heard that two of our favorite local bands will be entertaining! Comfort Zone is a terrific local jazz group and The Funsters – well they’re hard to describe. Let’s just say they are both popular local groups and the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center will be rocking for all ages.

CHEF invites the public as well as alumni to Winterjam from 7 to 11 pm, Friday, February 5th, 2010, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. Advance tickets are $10 each and are on sale at the Cape District Office and all the school offices. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $15 each. Local businesses are donating gifts for the event which will include a silent auction, raffles, 50/50, food, drink and more!
