Have you been to Lewes Beach? I’ve always wondered how the streets were named and I’m doing some research to try to find the answer. Lewes Beach is a narrow strip of land along the Delaware Bay between Savannah Road (Rt. 9) and the Lewes Yacht Club. Once small beach cottages lined the road and many have been passed down through multiple generations. Now you find elegant new multi-story homes interspersed with the original cottages and Victorian homes.

But I digress. As you drive along Cedar Street you notice that most of the streets on your right, between Cedar and Bay Avenue, are named after other states, interrupted by an occasional “O” Street or E. Market Street and some that appear to have no name. There’s New Jersey Ave., New York Ave., Maryland and Pennsylvania. In all I have counted some 23 state streets in Lewes Beach. I’m curious how they got their names. Did the first resident to build a cottage name the street after their state of birth? I was born in New Jersey myself and so many of my real estate clients these days are also from New Jersey, this made me feel right at home. I’ve also lived in other states here represented like New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and Maryland.

If it was random, who chose the 23 states and why is there Missouri but no Kansas? I’ve done my Google searches and so far found no explanation, but then I wasn’t born here. Guess I’ll visit the Lewes Historical Society and maybe the Zwaanendael Museum and ask one of the docents. If anyone reading this blog has information to share, please post your comments here.

Do you know all the States of Lewes Beach?

Downsize, upsize or RIGHTSIZE?

The choice is yours at Bay Crossing. With the new Dory model from Blenheim Homes, you can have a “just-right” single-level home with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a 2-car garage and just over 1600 square feet of easy living. The base price for this beach home is an affordable $324,900! Not enough space? You can add a second level with a 3rd bedroom, full bath and loft. Add a sunroom and a rear deck and get ready to welcome your guests this summer. When you live in Lewes, Delaware, your friends and family won’t need a second invitation.

Bay Crossing is only one of the exciting new active adult communities here in Coastal Delaware, but it is one of our most popular. With a Lewes address, a quick trip to town or Cape Henlopen State Park, it’s the best of both worlds.

Is now the time to buy in Coastal Delaware? Ask us and we’ll tell you all the reasons why now is the perfect time to take advantage of the buyer’s market at the beach in Delaware.

One of the great things about having your office right in the heart of town is having a front row seat for the Christmas Parade. This year, despite a slight drizzle, the parade was a fun event. Clients stopped in all night long to warm up and enjoy refreshments and camped out on the sidewalk in front of the building to enjoy the floats and the entertainment.

All of the shops on Second Street, just around the corner are staying open until 8 pm right up until Christmas. Some of our favorites, like Deanna’s and Twila Farrells are great places to buy a special gift for the women in your life. There are also great jewelry stores, antique shops, and a fabulous toy store owned and run by the Mayor and his wife.

The third annual Sea Glass Festival will take place on October 11th and 12th of 2008 at the University of Delaware, College of Marine Studies Campus, also known as The Virden Center, in Lewes, Delaware. This will be the first time the Festival has taken place on the East Coast; the first two took place in Santa Cruz, California. With a wonderful weather forecast for the weekend, we are expecting a crowd. The event will feature nationally known artisans and collectors of this increasingly popular coastal collectible.

In addition to lectures and seminars the international “Shard of the Year” contest will be held awarding a $1,000 cash prize to the collector with the most rare and desirable piece of sea glass. The contest which attracted over 900 entries in ‘07, will be judged by board members of the North American Sea Glass Association who are hosting the two-day event.

A growing crowd of sea glass collectors from across the U.S. attended the last two events and several international collectors will visit this year. Exhibitors include jewelry and craft artists, photographers and authors that have been featured in the national media.

The public is welcomed for an admission charge of $5.00 for the entire weekend. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Festival hours are from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. For more information visit the Sea Glass Festival page.
